Your menstrual cycle is more than just a biological function – it plays a crucial role in your physical and emotional well-being. The hormonal changes not only affect your cycle, but also have an impact on your mood, energy levels and behavior. The good thing is, you are not helpless against these effects. There is an opportunity to consciously use these cyclical changes to your benefit. Your cycle is divided into different phases, from menstruation to the phase before the start of the next cycle. Each phase is characterized by different characteristics that you may have already noticed. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how these phases affect you and how you can use these insights to become more aware of your everyday life and adapt activities to your cycle.

Focus on the four phases of your menstrual cycle

Your menstrual cycle follows a pattern divided into four main phases: the menstrual phase, the follicular phase, the ovulatory phase, and the luteal phase. Each of these phases is characterized by specific changes in your body that are closely linked to fluctuations in your hormones. During the menstrual phase, the cycle begins with the shedding of the uterine lining. In the follicular phase, which occurs immediately afterward, the hormone estrogen increases, which can lead to feelings of energy and creativity. Then comes the ovulation phase, when an egg is released and fertility is at its highest. You may feel particularly social and communicative during this time. Finally, during the luteal phase, progesterone increases, preparing the body for possible pregnancy. During this phase, you may be more inclined to rest and reflect. The differences between these phases bring with them different energies and needs that are worth recognizing in order to align your activities and decisions with your cycle.
